A heroic defence of a small village by the naval infantry, supported by some marines, saw the forces of the Mad Mahdi driven off after suffering horrendous losses. The British lost their irregular mounted riflemen and the gun crew, plus the naval infantry and both lancer units suffered heavy losses. The Sudanese cavalry was decimated, going from ten units to one, and the infantry lost well over 50% of its strength.

Overall it was a good game, with the small British force (2 lancer units, 1 mounted rifles, 1 machine gun, 1 cannon and 5 infantry) facing large numbers of Sudanese (10 cavalry, 3 skirmish foot, 1 cannon and over 20 irregular native units). The things that came up was the devastating effect of close range volley fire, the equally devastating effect of lancers charging and the amazing ability of the Sudanese officers to throw themselves in front of bullets.

If you get a chance to play Principles of War colonial games, give it a go. There are some pictures about, but I don't have them yet as the photographers are keeping them.

I am hopefully off to Nathan's later to give Wings of War a go. Looks like fun and I'll let you know what happened if I do get over there.

I am an aging Welsh exile living in Devon. This blog will be mainly about my wargaming experiences and the things I get up to with my local group of fellow gamers. We are based in and around Newton Abbot, getting together on a Monday night to play various games at Zob's house.

Usual scales are 15mm or 25mm, with the odd foray into other scales for naval or aircraft games. Favoured rulesets are Blitzkreig Commander, Poor Bloody Infantry, Fire and Fury, Bloody Barons and General Quarters.

I also go the the Devon Wargames Group on the 2nd Saturday of each month at Clifton Road Games. This is a friendly group and the facilities offered by Steve at Clifton Road are excellent.

I'll post more after Monday nights game, we are finishing of a Principles of War colonial game with the British fighting a horde of Sudanese and things are not looking too healthy for them.
